Citycare Property’s Cricket World Cup Overlay Project was awarded Project of the Year 2015 by the Project Management Institute of New Zealand (PMINZ).
Project complexities
A highly complex endeavour, the project involved multiple stakeholders to plan and design, as well as contract and deliver, the International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup overlay across the country in the face of high expectations, tight budgets and an immovable deadline.
In conferring the award, PMINZ recognised the project’s smart management of the unique challenges presented by the tournament, given its global profile, frequently-changing scope and intense media scrutiny.
Delivering success
The project was successfully delivered, with all eight venues operationally ready on time, a realised budget savings of NZ$400k, and project stakeholders across the country retaining a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Christchurch City Council asked Citycare to help create the infrastructure for the Cricket World Cup tournament games to be held at Hagley Park, Christchurch. Within the compressed 21-day build period the 150-year-old Hagley Oval was redeveloped into a state-of-the-art venue, ready to host the opening ceremony in February 2015.
Broadcast by 44 licensees, in seven languages across 220 territories, the ICC Cricket World Cup was a huge success, thanks to local authorities like the Christchurch City Council, and contractors such as Citycare Property, taking the lead to demonstrate that New Zealand has the skills and expertise to manage and deliver world-class events.
