Christchurch residents will benefit from a new community resource to celebrate the connection between the city and river.
Citycare Property soon begins construction of Dallington Landing, a social infrastructure project to be developed in the riverside Red Zone for the people of Christchurch to enjoy.
“For us, it’s another Red Zone project to create as a legacy for residents to connect with the river and their environment,” Contract Manager Structures Chris Pinion says.
“As residents ourselves, we cherish our community open spaces and the opportunities they offer to improve hauora tinana (physical health), hauora wairua (spiritual health), and hauora hinengaro (mental health), especially in times of uncertainty,” he says.
“For our client the Christchurch City Council, it’s the first landing to be built in the Green Spine of the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor and a great step forward in the regeneration plan as a gateway for access from the south of the city,” Chris says.
The design inspiration for the Dallington Landing is a ‘picnic in a forest’ and it includes two architecturally-designed shelters, several picnic tables, pathways, a toilet block, vast areas of grass and planting, a timber boardwalk and, of course, access to the river.
Dallington Landing will be developed along the popular Ōtākaro cycle route on the east side of the Gayhurst Road and Locksley Ave intersection.
“Citycare Property will begin construction works later this year and planting will take place following summer in the 2022 planting season,” Chris says.
The Green Spine forms the core of the Ōtākaro Avon River Regeneration Area. It’s about 11 kilometres long and 345 hectares in size and extends along both sides of the river, connecting all the public amenities in the area.

Monday, 1 August marks the exciting start of Citycare Property’s five-year Parks and Gardens Maintenance Contract with Whangārei District Council (WDC). The contract includes the ongoing management of more than 300 hectares of parks across the district. The WDC awarded the contract back in February.
On Monday, 25 July, Citycare Property joined four other council contractors in partnering with Christchurch City Council to operate a battery electric specialist truck within their businesses — part of a broader project by council to help it achieve its goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
