Jaime Tupaea's Journey from Pharmacy to Planting with Pride
Jaime Tupaea knows what it means to dig in and get things done. As Crew Leader for Citycare Property’s Waikato OSM team, she leads a tight-knit crew of gardeners who look after green spaces across Ngāruawāhia, Taupiri, Tamahere, Raglan, Tuakau and Port Waikato and Huntly. Her team has planted thousands of natives, improved drainage, and contributed to bringing wildlife back to local gullies across the Mighty Waikato. Jaime’s team takes pride in making a visible difference.
“I’ve always enjoyed gardening and being outdoors,” says Jaime. “I take pride in what I do and aim to do it to the highest standard.”
Jaime’s path to Citycare Property wasn’t a straight line. Originally from Hawke’s Bay, she spent 20 years as a dispensary technician before deciding it was time for a change. After a few months between jobs, she joined Citycare Property initially as a temp in the horticulture team and quickly found her stride. Five and a half years later, she’s leading a team of eight, including one apprentice, who share her passion for caring for Waikato’s community.
Her leadership style is all about communication and consistency. “Planning is key,” she says. “If people don’t know what’s happening, they feel left out. I make sure the team knows what they need and where they’re going.” Jaime also credits the support and guidance of her co-team leader, supervisor and Branch Manager.
Toolbox meetings, regular check-ins, and a hands-on approach help Jaime keep her crew motivated and supported. “Sometimes it’s just a phone call to check in,” she says. “They like to know they’re not alone and that help is there if they need it.”
Spring is one of the busiest times of year, and Jaime makes sure her team is ready. “It’s about staying consistent and being organised. We bring the team together the day before, make sure they’ve got everything they need from fertiliser to having a traffic management plan.”
For Jaime, the most rewarding part of the job is seeing neglected areas come back to life. “You go into a space that hasn’t been looked after, and after a bit of care and hard work, it’s transformed. That’s what all the gardeners get to see. It is a job that makes a real and visible impact.”
One of her favourite sites is a tricky valley with unstable slopes. “It’s a challenge, but I love it,” she says. “We’ve replanted with natives, the drains are clearer, and you see tui and pigeons coming back. It’s about putting the good stuff back in.”
Locals often stop to say thanks, and councillors have publicly acknowledged the team’s work. “People appreciate what we do,” Jaime says. “Even when we’re holding up traffic to plant annuals, they see it’s worth it when everything starts to flourish.”
Jaime’s proud of the journey she’s taken from pharmacy to horticulture, from team member to team leader. “I don’t mind being covered in mud,” she laughs. “Every day, I give it my all. I’m physically tired but mentally healthy.”
Citycare Property Branch Manager for Waikato, Damon Brown, acknowledges Jaime’s outstanding leadership. He says, “Her positive attitude, good communication, and genuine care for her team and our community shine through in her performance. Her journey and dedication inspire those around her, and the results of her efforts are visible across our greener spaces, thriving plantings, and proud community. I am grateful for all that Jaime brings to the Mighty Waikato and proud to have her leading by example.”
