Mapping the Future: How GIS Technology Is Transforming Citycare Property

At Citycare Property, innovation and commitment to enhancing community wellbeing drive our people and the services we deliver. Among the unsung heroes driving these outcomes is the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) team, a group of highly skilled and dedicated professionals who turn complex location data into practical insights, enabling smarter decisions, operational efficiency, and greater value for our clients.

Globally, GIS is being used in various industries from agriculture and urban planning to disaster management. In agriculture, for example, it helps farmers monitor crop health and manage irrigation. The technology’s ability to layer data and visualise patterns makes it a powerful tool for decision-making across sectors.

Turning maps into meaning

GIS is more than just plotting points on a map. It’s about turning location data into meaningful insights that help Citycare Property plan better, price more accurately, and deliver quality services. From As Built Surveys to scoping and asset capture, the GIS team plays a vital role in everything from tenders to operational efficiencies.

Using advanced tools like ArcGIS, integrated with our own Event Manager, the team ensures that every asset whether it’s a park bench, playground, or rubbish bin is mapped with pinpoint accuracy. “We’re talking centimetre-level precision,” says Felipe Alves, GIS Analyst. “Knowing I’ve been walking, surveying on a centimetre-level accuracy in a location and seeing the changes in the final product really motivates me.”

Meet Felipe Alves, GIS Analyst

Felipe’s journey in GIS mapping began in Brazil, where he spent 12 years in the police force, specialising in dog handling and tracking illegal miners and loggers in the forest. It was there where he first learned to use GPS and GIS to track criminal activity. With a law degree and a passion for technology, Felipe transitioned into geospatial work when he moved to New Zealand to get qualified. He joined Citycare Property through an internship. He’s now been with the company for two years.

One of Felipe’s standout projects was in the Far North, where he spent days mapping Whangrei District Council’s open space facilities. “GIS mapping allows us to map the exact shape and size of open spaces, which in turn allows for accurate pricing of jobs, often leading to significant cost savings for customers,” he explains. “We’re able to geo-reference and geo-tag existing pictures, creating up-to-date records for both Citycare Property and our customers.”

Felipe finds satisfaction in seeing his work come to life. “I am part of bringing a project to life (or at least virtual life),” he says. “I enjoy seeing my work go from green grass to a beautiful reserve.”

Shaping the Future

At Citycare Property, GIS is mapping the present and shaping the future. With limitless possibilities ahead, the team continues to push boundaries and deliver greater value for customers. As Felipe puts it, “The potential of GIS is limitless.”

He believes GIS opens up a world of new opportunities in the work we do for our clients. For example, using drones to assess grass health throughout the year and to capture precise coordinates holds enormous promise. These innovations could help councils ensure that development plans are followed and that assets are maintained to the highest standard.

The GIS team at Citycare Property is continuously redefining what’s possible. Every asset mapped and every innovative solution implemented supports today’s operations and lays the foundation for vibrant, well-cared-for spaces for every community we serve.
