Building Relationships
Building Relationships
Ngati Otara Marae played host to 52 Citycare Property Auckland kaimahi, suppliers and subcontractors in early February when the team took the opportunity to enjoy a marae experience. More than 50% of the group that attended had not previously been to a marae before. This visit provided the opportunity to stand and talk in a safe space to connect with the iwi of South Auckland.
The event was organised by Community Partnerships lead, Jody Deer, who explained that it was important to offer an opportunity to experience and understand the significance of the basics of a marae visit.
“Marae are the heart of community life for many Māori. They provide our place to celebrate, and they are often the host of functions like tribal gatherings, reunions and tangihanga. It’s important that Citycare Property staff, suppliers and contractors feel comfortable and safe when they are on the marae and that they know what’s happening and why. We started the day with a karanga followed by pōwhiri and waiata. After the formalities concluded, the team enjoyed fried bread in the whare kai before we said our farewells. It was the perfect chance to experience kotahitanga within a marae setting. It’s amazing how connecting with different cultures and traditions and respecting and understanding something new can ease fears and help people feel more comfortable in a new environment. Everyone contributed and it was heartwarming to see each person step forward and participate during the whakawhanaungatanga session,” said Jody.
Visits like this help to build relationships with our local communities where we work each day to deliver services, and they also support the work of our Cultural Advisory Rūnanga, Te Whakaroopu, who help provide Citycare Property kaimahi with workplace advice to ensure a safe and supportive work environment. Ensuring access to practical elements of a marae visit adds another layer of learning and cultural support within a community setting.
Over 18 different nationalities were represented on the visit, demonstrating the richness and diversity of the Citycare Property community in Auckland.
