Building Capability to Deliver for the South Wairarapa Community

When Robert McLaughlin joined Citycare Property ten years ago as a park maintenance trainee, he had no idea he was beginning a career that would see him grow into one of the company’s most respected leaders. What he did know was that he was eager to learn, ready to work hard, and committed to doing the job well. That mindset has shaped his entire journey.

Over the years, Rob has steadily worked his way up through the ranks. He is now the Supervisor of the South Wairarapa branch, leading Citycare Property’s Open Space Maintenance team. As a leader, Rob is dedicated to developing people and delivering for the South Wairarapa District Council and the community.

Supported by Citycare Property, Rob completed the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture Services Level 3 and Level 4 through Primary ITO. The training, combined with hands-on experience, has helped him guide and mentor many of the team members who have joined after him.

“Seeing the growth of people, as cheesy as it sounds, that’s what drives me,” he says. “Watching someone gain confidence and pick up new skills, and seeing their satisfaction in a job well done, that makes me happy.”

His team’s work is highly visible across South Wairarapa’s open spaces, and Rob knows that the community notices when things are not up to standard. That is why he sets the bar high and leads by example. Whether it is routine maintenance or supporting community events like preparing the Featherston War Memorial for Anzac Day, Rob and the team take pride in planning, preparation, and delivering a seamless result.

“It is really rewarding getting compliments from people in the community and the Council,” he says. “When something runs flawlessly and we have played our part in that, it feels good.”

Rob believes the key to great service is open communication. He encourages customers to approach the team freely with feedback, knowing that responsiveness builds trust. With a skilled and dedicated crew behind him, he is focused on ensuring South Wairarapa’s open spaces remain clean, safe, and enjoyable for the community.
