Celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

At Citycare Property, we recognise that embracing te ao Māori is a lifelong journey—one that enriches our people, strengthens our communities, and enhances the services we provide. We are proud to have Te Whakaroopu, our Cultural Advisory Rūnanga, guiding us along this path and creating opportunities for our kaimahi to develop their competency, and ensure that our organisation operates with genuine respect and cultural understanding.

Honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi

As a Good Kiwi Company, Citycare Property is committed to honouring the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi by working alongside mana whenua, iwi, hapū and Māori organisations in the communities we operate, contributing to the revitalisation of te reo Māori and upholding tikanga in our workplace, and creating opportunities for all kaimahi to engage with te ao Māori and strengthen their cultural understanding. These principles guide us in building an inclusive workplace culture that values diversity and reflects the unique identity of Aotearoa.

Our Mātauranga Māori Strategy

Through our Mātauranga Māori Strategy, we are committed to embedding Māori knowledge systems, tikanga (cultural practices), and te reo Māori into our organisation. This strategy is about more than acknowledgement – it is about action, equipping our people with the cultural understanding to engage respectfully and meaningfully across the diverse communities we operate in.

Te Whakaroopu and their role at Citycare Property

Te Whakaroopu plays a vital role in supporting our kaimahi to learn, grow, and connect with te ao Māori. Their mahi includes providing guidance on tikanga and te reo Māori, offering opportunities for kaimahi to take part in te reo lessons, marae visits, and cultural workshops. Te Whakaroopu also supports our kaimahi to confidently use te reo in the workplace.

Their leadership and passion make a real difference, ensuring that every kaimahi has the chance to deepen their cultural knowledge and contribute to a workplace that celebrates identity and inclusion.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, Te Whakaroopu has organised a week of activities designed to revitalise and celebrate te reo across our organisation. This includes sessions for all kaimahi to practise our company karakia, receive guidance on pronunciation, learn their pepeha, discover whakataukī (proverbs) and kupu (words) to use in everyday life, and take part in a quiz that will spark some friendly competition as teams test their reo knowledge.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to te reo Māori and te ao Māori is ongoing. Through the guidance of Te Whakaroopu, the direction of our Mātauranga Māori Strategy, and our commitment to uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we are building a workplace culture where language, identity, and inclusion are valued every day.

At Citycare Property, we are proud to support our kaimahi on their cultural journeys – today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
